Description | This private bank was founded in 1758 in the City of London by Abel Smith II (senior partner of Abel Smith & Co., bankers, of Nottingham), and John Payne, a London merchant and linen draper who was also chairman of the East India Company. Payne died in 1764, and his son carried on until 1799. The family then withdrew (though their name remained in the title) and the business passed entirely to the Smith family.
