TitleWatercourse and sluices
DescriptionIn the late seventeenth century John Bennet of Babraham Hall began to put into action plans to float water meadows in Babraham, the parish lying to the west of Little Abington, beyond the present A11. To this end he caused to be dug the 'New Cut', leading water from the river at little Abington through to Babraham. The first sluice gate was built in Little Abington in the eighteenth century to control the flow into the New Cut. It was always a source of contention between the two parishes. For documents relating to the earlier history of this, see Cambridgeshire Archives 619/E14-24. It appears that by 1861 a second set of sluice gates had been built. Remains of both were still in existence in 2015.
The dispute between Thomas Mortlock and Henry John Adeane of Babraham Hall related to Mr Adeane's rights to use of the watercourse as defined by the Inclosure Act and Award.
