TitleMemorial of the Governor and Company of the Bank of England
DescriptionThe memorialists have lent John Baker £24,000 and £5,000 in two mortgages, secured on his [Adventurers'] lands in the Bedford Level. Some of the land was sold in April 1829 to Francis King Eagle, for non-payment of taxes. They report that they received no notice or letter that the taxes were in arrear, they were not listed as the owners in the schedule at Shire Hall, and no advertisement of their intention to sell the property was inserted in a newspaper. They ask for the sale to be annulled, as the Bedford Level Corporation failed to comply with the rules and regulations concerning the sale of properties. One signatory [Winter, Kaye and Freshfield, solicitors to the Bank of England].
