TitleEngrossed Account Books
DescriptionOne hundred and seventy four volumes, containing the engrossed accounts of the Bedford Level Corporation. These were created annually by the Corporation's Auditor, and record the charges, discharges, payments and disbursements to the "General Accounts" and "North Level Account", the divisional accounts of Corporation Officers, and an engrossed abstract of the accounts for that year. The individual entries often contain a reference such as "B2, N3", which makes it possible to match them with the bills and receipts in the Bundles of Accounts (see BLC3/2). Later volumes (1830s onwards) also contain copies of reports concerning the finances of the Corporation. Many of the volumes have been counter-signed by the Corporation's Auditor.

There is a significant gap in this series of Engrossed Account Books between 1760 and 1806, although some sporadic volumes do survive for 1778-1779 and 1780-1787. Drafts of the Receiver General's "General Accounts" do exist from 1773-1774 onwards (see also BLC3/3/2), but often the only witness to the Corporation's accounts for these years are the Bundles of Accounts. An order was made in 1809 that yearly accounts should be regularly entered, and there are no subsequent gaps.
