TitleEvents in Jamaica
DescriptionThe recent events in Jamaica referred to in this petition relate to the Morent Bay Rebellion and the suppression that followed. A mob set fire to the courthouse in Morant Bay where the chief magistrate and 18 other people were killed. The governor, Edward John Eyre declared martial law and his violent suppression of the rebellion caused much debate between political factions in the UK. In Cambridge a public meeting was called to consider whether of not a response to the action was required.
