TitleChesterton Local Board
DescriptionChesterton Local Board was created in 1880 in response to the poor sanitation in Chesterton. According to the Victoria County History, accumulated filth from the workhouse would overflow the drainage ditches and in New Chesterton sewage sometimes ran in the streets, percolating through the underlying gravel so that the well water was unsafe to drink, making typhoid and dysentery rife in the late 1870s. The 1880s was therefore mainly concerned with sanitation, sewage disposal, and street cleaning and lighting. The Board consisted of 12 members. In 1894 it was replaced by newly established Urban District Council by the Local Government Act 1894.
