Description | A letter from Mr. N. Wilkinson of the Fletton Bench commented adversely on the proposals contained in the report, alleging hardship for the constables. A letter to the C.P. from Mr. J. Rust, chairman of Q.S., defended the proposals as allowing a new elasticity of payment. A strongly worded letter from Mr. N. Wilkinson, dated 7th Oct, commented on the working of the new scheme: in a serious charge of house-breaking at Washingley, the village constable did nothing - "is it worth their while to do anything?" - and whereas he, Mr. Wilkinson, had formerly advertised such cases in the 'Police Gazette' and even offered a reward for apprehension of the wanted men, he could no longer afford to do so.
