Includes payments for a variety of personal expenses such as clothing for himself and his children, books for the library, Christmas presents, charity, food, furniture, travel, wigs, guns etc. There are also payments for the upkeep of his estate, for farm stock, land taxes and rates, salaries for servants and the maintenance of his household.
Includes entries for a surgeon to treat his daughters when they had smallpox (1729).
The keeper of the accounts is not identified anywhere in the volume but can be assumed by reference to family members (e.g. "sister Cook", "my sister Betty", "my late brother Walter" etc.). |
