ActivityRichard Huddleston (1716-1760) was born into a family which was disadvantaged by their staunch religion but was nevertheless in a stronger financial position than they had been in the 17th century thanks to the efforts of his father Richard Huddleston (d.1717). This wealth had limits, as shown by the selling in 1745 of the Manor of Whittlesford, but was doubtless aided by Richard's marriage in 1735 to an heiress. It is difficult to understand the course of Richard's life without an appreciation for the position of Catholics in society during the 18th century, as a Protestant in his position would likely have spent much of his time engaged in holding public office - something denied to the Huddlestons. The family's exclusion from such roles long led them to take a higher than average interest in the traditions of their tenants in Sawston, and Richard evidently filled some of his time with charitable work. He was also evidently interested in religion, having two sisters who entered the convent, and a visitor in 1757 described a Jesuit who had lived at Sawston Hall for the prior 30 years, indicating that Richard shared his family's strong religious views.
