ActivityGeorge Thornhill (1738-1827) was a landowner and the head of his family for over seven decades, consolidating his family's status as part of the gentry in Huntingdonshire and expanding his interests into Cambridgeshire through the acquisition of Boxworth and Graveley. He clearly worked hard to establish connections with other families in the county, including by arranging a marriage for his daughter with the head of the Heathcote family. He also arranged a marriage for his heir with an heiress which added further lands (the manor of Offord Darcy) to his family's estates in the county. A further way he secured his status in the county was serving as the High Sheriff of Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire in 1791, indicating his interest in local governance and that he was identified as a respectable figure.
