Activity"Charles 1st Duke of Manchester, one of the first who espoused the cause of the Prince of Orange; he took an active part in the campaign in Ireland, being present at the Battle of the Boyne and the subsequently unsuccesful seige of Limerick. In 1696 he was apptd. Amb. Extraor. to the republic of Venice; in 1699, accredited Amb. Extraor. to the Court of France; in 1701, constituted Principle Sec. of State and in 1707 deputed Amb. extraor. to the Court of Vienna. Upon the accession of George I His Lordship was continued in the Lord Lieutenancy of Huntingdon, Sworn of the Privy Council, apptd. one of the Lords of His Majesty's Bedchamber and finally created Duke of Manchester, 28 April 1719." - from Burke's Peerage (1967)
