Epithetfamily
ActivityThe Gordon family has been among the leading aristocratic families of Scotland for many centuries, with large estates in Aberdeenshire that at their peak covered some 120,000 acres. Successive generations of the family were members of regency councils, leading advisors, commanders of armies and the 2nd Earl of Huntly served as High Chancellor of Scotland. This was in addition to other offices which were almost guaranteed to be held by the head of the Gordon family, for example the post of Lord Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire. Alongside this distinguished history of royal service - which extended to the 2nd Marquess being executed for his Royalist sympathies in 1649 - there were also periods in which the Gordons embodied the late medieval role of over-mighty magnates who pursued personal feuds and rebelled against the monarchy. This led to the 4th Earl of Huntly dying in captivity and on at least one occasion the Gordon lands were declared by the crown to be forfeit. The family were peers of Scotland before the Act of Union of 1707, and thereafter they were invited as representative peers of Scotland to sit in the British House of Lords until two different branches of the family were granted honours in the peerage of the United Kingdom to give them official, permanent seats in the House of Lords. They are one of the few families to have persisted in holding power for the better part of a millennium, and the Marquessate of Huntly has the distinction of being the second-oldest surviving Marquessate in the UK - Winchester being the oldest. Though their conduct has occasionally included disloyalty, at other times they have been among the most faithful servants of the crown and have always managed to navigate the events of the day successfully.
