TitlePapworth Village Settlement papers about Enham Village Centre, Andover, Hampshire
DescriptionFor the background to the association of Papworth Village Settlement and the Enham Village Centre, Hampshire, see the general introduction to the Papworth Archive Lists. It is sufficient to say here that during the 1920s the interests of the institutions converged. Both had their financial stresses and in 1926 the Centres Council for the Curative Treatment and Training of Disabled Ex-service Men, that ran Enham, approached Varrier-Jones, who had successfully re-modelled the British Legion establishment at Preston Hall on Papworth lines, to achieve the same with Enham. A managerial revolution was effected at the Enham Centre, as the principal officers were all sent on to pastures new. Varrier-Jones was brought on to the Executive Council and Bertram Tallyn, his general manager at Preston Hall, was appointed to take over the running of the workshops with the expert advice of Charles Boivin, the Papworth general manager. The only quid pro quo, which may have saved some face, seems to have been that Papworth's London publicity thenceforward was to come within the province of Reynell Wreford, the Council's Secretary (see introductory note to 1383/22-24). The papers, unless stated otherwise, were received in good order, as part of the 27 transfer cases which included files for the following years for the Centre, 1928-1931, 1933-1935, 1937-1938, 194?. They had the appearance of never having been opened since their removal from Papworth in 1946.
