TitlePapers relating to Preston Hall, Aylesford, Kent.
DescriptionThe Preston Hall Sanatorium and Colony was established in 1920 for the purpose of giving treatment and training to ex-servicemen with tuberculosis 'by a body of philanthropic workers who banded themselves together under the name of 'Industrial Settlements Incorporated' [Brieger, 'After-care and Rehabilitation', pp. 121-2, 1383/1/3]. The emphasis was on providing work on the land for ex-patients. In 1925 it was taken over by the British Legion and Varrier-Jones was brought in to re-organise it on Papworth industrial lines, the manager being Bertram Tallyn. Pendrill Varrier-Jones was Honorary Medical Director of Preston Hall 1925-1927, the period of its reorganisation. In 1927 he surrendered management to Dr MacDougall. Unless stated otherwise, the papers were received in good order, as part of the 27 transfer cases that have the appearance of never having been opened after their removal from Papworth in 1946.
