TitleRose, Richard
DescriptionRichard Rose (1751-1800) was the brother-in-law of John Mortlock, banker. He was the half brother of John Mortlock's wife Elizabeth Harrison (married 1776), his father Richard Rose having died in 1752 and his mother Mary Rose (née Day) having remarried to Stephen Harrison, grocer of Cambridge. Richard'had an older brother and sister who died young, leaving him sole heir to the property of his father. (Richard also refers to his stepfather Stephen Harrison as his father, for example, in 509/4/92/4e).
Richard, according to 509/4/92/1, was a haberdasher in Cheapside, London, but in 1774 purchased a cornetcy in the army (Kings Dragoons Guards). While Richard was stationed in various places in England and Scotland his affairs in Cambridge were managed by attorney at law Robert White.
He left the army after an illness (c. 1782), which affected his reason for a time, and took a house in Chard, Somerset, where, much to his family's disapproval, he formed the intention to marry. In 1784 he was admitted to Nathaniel Cotton's Asylum in St Albans, where he remained until his death.
