TitleAbington Lodge
DescriptionFavourite residence in Abington of later members of the Mortlock family, Abington Lodge is set back from the High Street just south of the river in Great Abington. The house dates, in its present form, from the 1720s, though some parts are older; it was enlarged in 1730. Frances Holt inherited the house from her husband sometime before 1800 and lived there until 1833, possibly until she died – her burial is not recorded for Great Abington. Frances Holt is recorded as owner in the Poor Rate Book in March 1833; ownership had changed by June 1833, but not to Mortlock (Cambridgeshire Archives, Overseer's Rate Book, Great Abington P1/11/1). There are gaps in the record between 1837 and 1854 when there is the first record of Thomas Mortlock's ownership for April 1854 (Poor Rate Book P1/11/3), while the Post Office Directory for 1858 (p.2) lists his residences as the Cambridge Bank House and Abington Lodge. In the same Directory for 1864 (p.4) E. J. Mortlock was living there; on his death in 1902 it passed to his daughter Alice Mortlock (VCH ,Vol. VI, p. 6) who lived there until just before her death in 1951. By 1953 (Electoral Roll) Dr A. E. Clark-Kennedy (E. J. Mortlock’s grandson) was living there and by 1961 Abington Lodge had been sold out of the Mortlock family. For references to expenditure on the Lodge during E. J. Mortlock’s ownership, see 509/7/2/3/1.
