TitleMemorandum by Thomas Speed, 'The Account of the Sluice Gates at Abington Hall'
DescriptionConcerning the rights of Mr Mortlock and Mr Adeane over, and maintenance of, sluices controlling river.
'The one with two gates is to be keep in repair by Mr Mortlock the one with three gates is to be keep in repair by Mr Adean.
Mr Adean have power to shut them down and take them up at any time he please, from the first of April throughout all the summer, but for no other use than flowing his Medowes and, if he should put down his Sluice Gates and there come any more water down by the fall of Rain so that the water rise above the bottum of the Stone, then Mr Mortlock have a right to take up the Gates but not to put them down but after the water is gone down so that there is no fear of its rising too high then Mr Adean have the right to put the Gates down again.
He is also to have a rite of way for his man by the side of the River and a Carriage way is to be made for him in any way Mr Mortlock pleases so that if Mr Mortlock ever wish to put the now present Road bye, But still there must be a Road for him to come with his Carriage, or to bring any Materials to repair the Sluices.
He has also a right to Clean the river out when he please but have no right to take away the soil, or mud, that may colect, But Mr Mortlock can take it away or Give it to any one of his tenants that he may think proper.'
