TitleCambridge Properties
DescriptionThe most important of the Mortlock properties in Cambridge were the Bank and the adjacent Mansion House in Bene't street. This was the first official bank premises - the banking business before that probably having been carried on from the wool merchant's premises (possibly at the market end of Rose Crescent). In 1783 John Mortlock bought from the Finch family the mansion they had built on the site of the Augustinian Friary in Ben'et Street, which they had in turn bought from the University. The two buildings are contiguous and the property is usually referred to as 'The Mansion House and Bank'. The buildings are still [2015] to be seen in Bene't street and in September 2004 were marked by a blue plaque.
