TitleBorough and Corporation of Cambridge
DescriptionJohn Mortlock was mayor of Cambridge 23 times from 1785, alternating first with John Forlow, then for 4 years with Samuel Francis, then 3 years with John Forlow jnr, and finally, for 4 years, with his eldest son John Cheetham, 1801-07. After 1809, the mayorality alternated between Frederick Cheetham Mortlock and John Cheetham Mortlock until 1816; not until 1821 did the Mortlock family cease to dominate the running of the town. Some documents dating from before John Mortlock's death (1816) relate to Borough business but have survived in this archive. Later documents are in the archive because for many years Mortlocks Bank acted as banker to the Cambridge Corporation. The terms 'Borough' and 'Corporation' are interchangeable, though officially, the borough ceased to exist after the reforming1835 Municipal Corporation Act.
