| Description | 1-108: Landwade, Exning and adjacent parishes (Burwell, Fordham, Newmarket St Mary, Soham). 110-118: Haddenham, Linton and Rickinghall (Suffolk); these deeds have no obvious archival connection with either the Cotton Landwade and Exning deeds, but their generally early date and easterly location of the property suggests that they originated with them, rather than from the early deeds of estates subsequently acquired. 119: Little Wigborough, Essex. 120-122: Farningham and surrounding parishes (Kent) and London; these deeds evidently owe their presence in this archive to the marriage of Anne Cotton, daughter of Sir John Cotton (d.1593) to Anthony Roper of Farningham, the Cottons thus became involved in the administration of Roper's charity, deeds of which are catalogued 588/Q-588/T120, may be related to these as in part it concerns property in East Greenwich where the charity lands were situated. 123-306: Madingley, Girton, Hardwick and surrounding parishes (Barton, Cambridge St Giles, Chesterton, Cottenham, Dry Drayton, Great Eversden, Grantchester, Histon, Impington, Landbeach, Toft); acquired by marriage about 1647 of Sir John Cotton, baronet, to Jane Hynde or purchased thereafter. 307: Hockley (Essex); the presence of this deed in the collection probably derives from the marriage circa 1545 of Sibell Hynde to Sir John Cutts. 308-314: Hatley St George, Westerham (Kent), St Martin-in-the-Fields (London) and Temple Michale (Co Waterford, Ireland); estates in these parishes were acquired by the marriage of Sir John Hinde Cotton (1686-1752/3) to Margaret, the daughter of James Craggs, esquire, and widow of Samuel Trefusis of Trefusis (Cornwall). 315-319: Gamlingay; the Cottons may have gained an interest in these estates by the inheritance of Hatley St George Manor. 320: Ilketshall St Lawrence (Suffolk); copyhold estate inherited from William Sancroft of Frossfield, Sir John Hynde Cotton's brother-in-law. 321-328: Dorking, Epsom, Reigate and district (Surrey); these estates came into the Cotton family's hands by the marriage in 1745 of Sir John Hinde Cotton, the 4th baron, to his cousin Anne Parsons, daughter of Humphrey Parsons of Reigate and sometime Lord Mayor of London, his mother's sister's husband (cf especially 335). 329-342: London; a rather miscellaneous group, some deriving from Parsons' property. 343-343: Mold (Flintshire); no obvious reason for the existence of these deeds in the family's archives. 345: Westwell (Norfolk); this deed probably derives from Sir John Hynde Cotton's litigation with John Wogan, perhaps arising from bequest of his grandfather (cf 320). 346: Groton (Suffolk). 347-351: Miscellaneous. |
