TitleProbate Accounts
DescriptionProbate accounts, also known as compoti, were created by the administrator or executor of a will after completion of the property valuation. The accounts are a summary of the value of the estate after all debts had been paid. As a result the files usually include detail descriptions of the testator's property. The records were created as part of the process of proving the value of the property and are thus held separately to the actual grants of probate. The charge referred to in the file descriptions is the total value put on 'all and singular the goodes, rights, credits and chattels' of the testator. This is usually recorded on the first page of the account. Where a clear note of the occupation of the testator is recorded this has also been added to the description after their name.
