DescriptionThe bonds constitute an agreement between the bishop and a clergyman appointed as the surrogate of the commissary or official of the archdeaconry. The surrogate was required to carry out the duties of the commissary at the level of the parish. Many of the bonds in this series are accompanied by acts of the archdeaconry court required to appoint a surrogate.
