TitleCourt papers
Description"251" was Noble and Ladds original classification.

The Court Papers of the Archdeaconry of Huntingdon contain chiefly those relating to causes in the ecclesiastical courts but also some papers concerning the Visitation of Timothy Neve D.D. Archdeacon of Huntingdon in 1748 and that of Nicholas Cholwell LL.B. Archdeacon of Huntingdon in 1773.
The Court Papers cover 92 parishes in Huntingdonshire including Everton-cum-Tetworth and Swineshead now in Bedfordshire and Thurning now in Northamptonshire. The subjects include disputes about tithes, church rate and seats, corrections of faults (bastardy, fornication, adultery and incest) and of defamation. Causes before the courts involve both clergy and laity and reflect all the weaknesses of the human character.
Particularly interesting are the numerous depositions of witnesses which give the person age and place of birth. Likewise the causes concerning Defamation of Reproach often contain strong and colourful language of those involved and those concerning correction in embarrassing sexual situations.
The visitations of Archdeacons Neve and Cholwells papers are useful for they are Inventories of the goods and vessels of each parish church and provide information on such things as Church plate.
For the outcome of many of the causes in these papers searchers are advised to consult AH11/266 Penances, AH12/267 Letters Denunciatory of Excommunication and AH12/268 Schedules of Excommunication & Absolutions of Excommunication.
