TitleProceedings of the Society of Adventurers
DescriptionEight volumes, containing the proceedings [minutes] of the Society of Adventurers prior to the Bedford Level Act 1663. Initially, the minute books record the re-establishment of the Society of Adventurers and the protracted contractual negotiations with Cornelius Vermuyden over his appointment as Director of Works; then the progress of the Society of Adventurers in restoring existing works and creating new works (New Bedford River, St John's Eau, Tong's Drain, the Forty Foot Drain, the Sixteen Foot Drain, the Twenty Foot Drain, Stonea Drain, Hammond's Eau and Conquest Lode); but later the focus moved towards the creation of new legislation to preserve the drainage works in the Bedford Level, and to give powers and rights to the Society to maintain them ("An Ordinance for the Preservation of the Works of the Great Level of the Fens" in 1657; two temporary maintenance Acts in 1660 and 1661, and ultimately the Bedford Level Act 1663).
