DescriptionThe Bedford Level Act 1663 gave the Bedford level Corporation powers to levy a drainage tax on all 95,000 acres of Adventurers' lands in the Bedford Level. The Acquittance Books (see BLC3/4/1) and Tax Receipt Books (see BLC3/4/2 and BLC3/4/3) contain schedules of the taxes collected. These were used to identify the owners of Adventurers' lands who were in arrears of tax, so that their names could be included on the annual Arrears Rolls (see BLC3/5).
