TitleArrears Rolls
DescriptionTwenty bundles of Arrears Rolls, detailing those in arrears of [drainage] tax to the Bedford Level Corporation. These were affixed to the door of the Shire House in Ely on the three previous Thursday Market Days before the annual April meeting, to notify defaulters that their lands were to be forfeited and sold. They were created each February by the Receiver General, and were affixed with the Corporation seal. By 1830, the Arrears Roll was also published in the local newspapers, and the Registrar also wrote to the owners of Adventurers' lands in arrears, warning them that their lands had been put up to be sold. If payment was still not received, and no satisfactory reason was given, the lands were auctioned at the annual April meeting.

The entries are arranged by lot, and also record the penalty due for non-payment and whether the debt was eventually discharged. Some bundles also contain schedules of cut lands, whose taxes were deducted.
