TitleCommon Day Book
DescriptionThe description and starting date given by Barnard is from the elaborate title on the first page (i.e. excluding endsheets), but this cannot refer to the contents of the book which is written on from the ninth folio only. The starting date does not agree and all the first 8-leaf section is worm-holed quite differently to the (few) worm holes from fo 9 onwards. Damage at the edge of the page and staining is also quite different, as is the ink. It seems therefore that these first 8 folios - a title and 15 blank pages - were once quite separate and relate to an unfulfilled intention of Edward Ball which has been misbound here at a later date, presumably because, by chance, both Edward Ball's intended compilation and the Common Day Book began 35 Henry VIII (Barnard appears to have misread this as 30 Henry VIII, hence he gives the starting date as 1539) and ended at 24 Elizabeth I (1581-2) - possibly Edward Ball intended to use this book as a basis for his compilation. There seems little reason to doubt that this is the Common Day Book itself - i.e. the engrossed formal record or order book of the Borough. Vol 6 in this series would than appear to be a draft for 1564-76/7 (cf vols 20-28). Vol 57 contains the full text of some corporation deeds not in vol 6 (cf fos 281v-283v, 283v-284 (cf vol 6 pp126-7) but it would need further study to confirm which volume is derived from the other.
