DescriptionThe town clerk's correspondence reflects the diversity of his role. It includes letters to the Mayor, committee members, officials such as the town surveyor, inspector of nuisances, medical officers of health, members of the university, members of parliament, parliamentary agents and solicitors, and inhabitants of Cambridge. Subjects under discussion include: the election of officers and officials; rules and regulations of institutions such as the Gaol; the condition of streets and public spaces; providing notice of public meetings and sermons; arranging appointments; election returns; outstanding payments owed to the Corporation; the borough rate; the sale of stock and properties; and the passage of legislation.
