DescriptionThis material relates to the enlargement of the market following the 1849 fire. It comprises minutes and reports of the Market Committee, 1841-1848, and 1853; correspondence relating to the parliamentary application for an act for regulating the markets and fairs held within the Borough and at Reach, and for enlarging the Market Place, and for rebuilding or altering the Guildhall, and for the improvement of the said Borough and the better regulation of the Police, 1849-1851; correspondence and reports regarding the prosecution of traders selling bad meat, 1840-1845; notices to owners, lessess and occupiers of premises and land required by the Corporation for the market expansion; correspondence and legal papers relating to claims for compensation from owners, lessess, occupiers and businesses affected including; AJ Brimley, Frances Bridges, Mrs Styles, Hannah Cooke, Mary Edwards, Eliza Mary Turner, John Harvey, Sussanah Harradine, St John's College, Elizabeth and John Haslop, Richard Johnson, Joseph Bond, William Henry Emmerson, Henry Kent, Joseph Pearless, Richard and Michael Smith and John Bowbier; correspondence and tenders relating to the design for a new conduit head in the market place; and some legislative papers for cases relating to rights to the market tolls.
