TitleMarket Committee: the Corn Exchange
DescriptionThis series relates to the building of the new Corn Exchange. It contains a few papers relating to work on the old Corn exchange between 1841-1842, including invitations to tender for work, committee reports and subscription lists. The series consists of reports and minutes of the Corn Exchange Committee and the Market Committee relating to a suitable site, raising finances, negotiations over property and the designs for the new building; correspondence, agreements and conveyances for the purchase of property on the chosen site; correspondence relating to the borrowing powers of the Corporation; maps of the site and proposed designs by R Reynolds Rowe and G Whitemore; specifications for design by Rowe; a report and related correspondence of Alfred Waterhouse on his opinion of the final six designs; correspondence from unsuccessful designers; a memorial from ratepayers in favour of the building of the new Corn Exchange; correspondence between the town clerk and contractors tendering for the work; an agreement with Messrs Bell and Sons for completing works; case papers from a Chancery case brought against the Corporation to try to stop the building of the new Corn Exchange; further agreements for works to the Corn Exchange between 1875-1881; letter of complaint about practices at the Corn Exchange and lists of applications for desks.
