TitleTranscripts of ten days of arbitration between the Corporation and Cambridge University and original letter requesting arbitration
DescriptionThe arbitration was heard before Sir John Patteson at the Law Institution, Chancery Lane. The case relates to multiple matters in dispute between the University and the town of Cambridge relating particularly to the financial contributions of the University to the civil administration of the town. The opening disputes relate to the voluntary contribution of the University to the maintenance of the police force, the reduction of the University contribution to the paving, lighting and sewerage quota and the payment of general rates. Over the subsequent day the case progresses to investigate the individual liability of each college to pay parish rates by establishing the exact location of the colleges and the historical rights of the colleges to those properties. Sir John Patteson's finding became the basis for the Cambridge Award Act, 1856.
