DescriptionThe Borough Council employed its own Medical Officer of Health for the City.

The sections responsibilities and activities included:

Public health inspections under the public health and housing acts, food and drugs acts and associated regulations, food hygiene regulations, clean air act, 1957, the factory acts, the Housing Act, 1957 slum clearance, rodent control, Rent Act, 1957 certificates of disrepair and housing acts improvement grants applications and inspections and reports, slaughterhouse inspections, inspections of council houses on vacation.

The department also issued public health licenses for premises such as slaughterhouses, dairies, common lodging houses, caravans, and premises dealing in rag and flock and other filling materials.

A number of health services were the responsibility of the County including Maternity and Child Welfare services, district nursing and health visitors, however the City Medical Officer of Health would have managed the delivery of these services within the Borough.

At present the department records are limited to lists of slaughterhouses within the Borough, 1853-1864; and papers relating to relations between Addenbrookes hospital and the University Medical School, 1894-1896.
