Title Building byelaw plans
DescriptionThe catalogue entries for plan numbers 1-16069 have been derived from an access database index to building byelaw plans created by Cambridge City Council. This database in turn was derived from original entries made in the building bye-law registers. (Held within this collection at CB/2/SE/3/8.) The original database contained details of the number of the plan, (a consecutive number sequence by date of application,) the number of the building byelaw register the data was extracted from, a description of the building applied for, the situation of the property, and the name and address of the owner.

Details of the type of plan and its location/address have been combined to form the title of each plan, the names and addresses of owners applying for the building approval can be found under the description field.

Responsibility for building control transferred from the Cambridge Improvement Commissioners to the Corporation in 1889, plans listed in the Building Byelaw registers between 1887-1889 are therefore listed as Cambridge Improvement Commissioners plans. The Borough Surveyor would present planning applications to meetings of the General Purposes Committee (Cambridge Improvement Commissioners) who would either approve or disapprove plans before their decision was confirmed at General meetings of the Cambridge Improvement Commissioners.

From 1889 the Guildhall and Building Committee (Cambridge Municipal Corporation) was formed and took over responsibility for approving plans before submitting them to the Borough Council for confirmation. The Guildhall and Building Committee was renamed the Plans Committee in 1900.

Building byelaws, (see CB/2/CL/12 for copies) most often relate to sewage specifications, connections of services and structural stability so some presented plans may not correspond exactly to the aesthetic or final build.

Catalogue entries for application numbers 16070-22873 are being created from entries recorded in the minutes of the Planning sub-committee and later the Plans Approval committee. These entries are not yet available in this catalogue but will follow in the near future.

Due to the extent of the collection it has not been possible to confirm that each plan survives.
