TitleWorks section
DescriptionThe Works section was arranged into the following seven sections:

1. Highways, refuse collection and disposal under the supervision of the highways superintendant. He was responsible for a workforce who undertook repair, maintenance and new highway works, cleaned the streets and gullies, maintained the Borough's public conveniences, maintained refuse collection vehicles and the refuse plant and oversaw the work of the Blacksmiths shop in the central store yard.

For highways plans see CB/2/SE/1/1 Technical Engineering plans following existing numbered arrangement and CB/2/SE/1/2 Technical engineering plans for highways and preliminary site preparations for housing developments

2. Sewers and sewage disposal including the work of the sewage farm and the pumping station. Both facilities had a manager to oversee the day to day running of the sites.

For sewerage plans including plans of the pumping station and sewage farm see CB/2/SE/1/4 Technical engineering plans for sewage disposal.

3. Commons, parks and open spaces of which Parkers Piece and Christ's Pieces had their own curators.

For plans of commons, parks and open spaces and public facilities such as swimming pools and sports pavillions see CB/2/SE/2/3 Technical Architectural plans: public facilities

4. Cemeteries including Cambridge City Cemetery, Histon Road Cemetery and Mill Road Cemetery.

For plans of Histon Road Cemetery see CB/2/SE/1/1 Technical Engineering plans following existing numbered arrangement and CB/2/SE/1/5 Public Utility plans.

The City Cemetery was opened in June 1903 as Cambridge Borough Cemetery before changing its name to the Regional Cemetery and finally settling on the City Cemetery. Huntingdon Road Cemetery has developed as an extension.

The majority of the surviving records held within this series are for Histon Road Cemetery opened in 1843. This was formerly known as Cambridge General Cemetery.

5. The Crematorium opened in 1938 as a private concern before being taken over by the City Council in 1950. The only records deposited as part of the archive at present are the registers of entries in the book of remembrance.

The works department also included Cam Conservators staff performing river maintenance and working as lock keepers. There are currently no records within the collection which reflect this work or the work undertaken by the workman, masons, wheelwrights etc who worked in the depots and store yards.
