TitleRecords of the City Surveyor (Borough Surveyor)
DescriptionThe structure and name of the department of the City Surveyor changed significantly between 1835-1974 as legislation and regulation effected the volume of work however the overall responsibilities of the role remained much the same. The structure reflected within the catalogue is taken in large part from a review of the Council administration undertaken by Arthur Collins and Co in 1959.

The City Surveyor with the support of his deputy oversees a department responsible for a wide range of duties: engineering and architectural works including construction, repair and maintenance; highways including lighting, street and gulley cleansing; refuse collection and disposal; sewers and sewage disposal; building inspection; town planning; maintenance of commons, parks and open spaces; upkeep and administration of cemeteries and crematorium, management of depots and stores; repair and maintenance of vehicles and plant, construction and maintenance works for the Cam Conservators and the organisation of the direct labour force. To manage these duties the department was arranged into six identifiable sections: technical engineering, technical architectural, associated technical services, photographic section, works section and administrative and clerical section. Full details of the duties and responsibilities of each section can be found under the relevant series description.
