TitleLarge scale maps and sections of Richard Reynolds Rowe's (town surveyor) sewerage map of Cambridge showing main drains and pipes and the parish boundaries
DescriptionThese maps include few features other than drains and sewage pipes, most buildings are delineated to show the length of frontage onto roads. Where buildings are featured they are coloured pink. Each road map is 50 inches x 29 inches with a scale of 44ft to inch, [120 inches to the mile]. The cross sections of main sewers for each road show the depth and gradient of pipes and are marked with intersecting roads, and structures such as gates, posts and pumps. Size: 50 x 29 inch. Horizontal scale 44ft to inch. Vertical scale 4ft to inch.

The map was commissioned in April 1850 by the Cambridge Improvement Board. Initial progress proved expensive due to the level of detail recorded, so a report by the map committee in Oct 1851 outlined revised requirements for the map to feature streets in outline with the course of the sewers traced upon it on a scale of 88 feet to the inch. This would be accompanied by a vertical section of each street showing the depth and position of each sewer. The outcome was 26 sheets marking the outline of the roads of the town and 24 sections. A couple of the sheets, in particular sheets 6 and 20, contain a higher level of detail than the others which could mean they were plotted before the map committee report of Oct 1851. The map and sections were deposited at the Guildhall for reference by any parties erecting new buildings.
