TitleSurveyor and Engineering Department
DescriptionThe role of the surveyor, first appointed on 18 Jun 1788 (Francis Carter) was originally an individual responsible for reporting what work was required to the Improvement Board; directing the repair, cleansing and extension of drains and sewers; roads, ditches; the laying of curbs and footways, and overseeing scavenging contracts. As the town grew and with it the responsibilities of the Commissioners the surveyor became the head of a department, appointing men to oversee each discipline, establishing practices for recording orders issued, stock, and materials and providing reports on the condition of the sewerage of the town and proposing solutions.

This series consists of maps and sections of Richard Reynolds Rowe's (town surveyor) sewerage map of Cambridge showing main drains and pipes and the parish boundaries, 1858; and the surveyor's copy of the Improvement Commissioners account order for 1881.
