TitleCambridge University and Town, (Cambridge Improvement) bill, 1874
DescriptionThe Cambridge University and Town bill, original short title the Cambridge Improvement bill, was promoted by the Cambridge Improvement Commissioners, the Borough Council and the University. The objectives included the reconstruction of the board of Improvement Commissioners, removal of exemptions from rates, rating of University and College Property, abolishment of the University quota, alteration of proctorial powers, removal of parliamentary and municipal disabilities, and the repeal or amendment of the Cambridge Award Act. It was hoped the act would promote relations between the University and town and allow the Commissioners to raise rates to fund improvements to the sewage of the town.

This series contains minutes of meetings, reports, correspondence, petitions and draft petitions to parliament in support of, and against, the bill and in support of dispensing with the standing orders as a response to a delay submitting the bill to the House of Lords.

The bill was suspended due to chancery proceedings brought against the Commissioners in the case of the Attorney General v Peed, a case resulting from a motion, by a number of rate payers of the Borough, before the Master of the Rolls for the restraint of payment of costs to fund the promotion of the bill. The chancery papers relating to this case and correspondence and opinion of counsel on the liability for costs incurred during the promotion of the bill and the settlement of costs are included with this series.
