TitleRegister of owners of property and proxies
DescriptionThis register records those with an entitlement to vote, as property owners within the parish. The 1832 Representation of the People Act standardized the borough franchise, giving the vote to owners of property worth £10. To ensure that this did not reduce the number of voters within a borough it was also enacted that where a man had been entitled to the vote prior to 1832 they would retain the right to the vote providing they remained resident within the borough.

The 1867 Representation of the People Act extended the borough franchise to all male householders within the borough who had been an inhabitant or occupier, (as owner or tenant) for twelve months at any dwelling house within the borough and had been rated at that property. The 1884 Representation of the People Act standardized the voting rights of the County with those of the Boroughs effectively meaning that every male householder was eligible to vote.

The register of owners of property and proxies within this collection contains details of the name of the owner; the address; a description of the property in respect of which the vote is claimed; a reference number to payments of the poor rate; aggregate amount of assessment, name of proxy; address of proxy; and date on which the claim was received. Entries are crossed out when owners died, filed a new claim or sold the property.
