TitlePublic Protection Committee 1973-1989
DescriptionThis committee exercised all the powers and duties of the County Council (1) as Fire Authority, (2) in relation to various consumer protection enactments and (3) in relation to sundry other matters of a public protection nature.

In practice the committee was something of a catch-all. Its responsibilities included: betting and lotteries; bird protection; celluloid storage; charities; commons; consumer protection; the coroners' service; dogs; employment agencies; explosives; film ratings and showings; fire safety; local taxation licences; noise abatement; nurses' agencies; peacetime emergencies; petroleum storage; public entertainment licences; registration of births, marriages and deaths; reservoir safety; sale and storage of goods including food, drink, drugs, medicines, poisons, fertiliser and animal feed; trade descriptions; weights and measures; weighbridges; and any byelaws relating to matters outside the terms of reference of other committees.

The Joint Consultative Committee for the Uniformed Members of the Fire and Rescue Service (see CC7/M2/10) seems in practice to have been regarded as a sub-committee of the Public Protection Committee rather than as a sub-committee of the main county council Personnel Sub-Committee (eg its placement in the CCC Members' diary 1986-1988).

In 1989 the Public Protection Committee was replaced by the Protective Services Committee (see CC7/M6/3).
