DescriptionLetter of application from William Chamberlayne to Sir Thomas Cotton, Kt. and Bart. at his house in Eworth(?), Beds, asking for the rectorship of Steeple Gidding, N.D. Receipt for tythes and Church dues for the prsonage of Steeple G. From William Chamberlayne to Sir Thos. Cotton. £6.10s. for ½ a year. 26 May, 1651. Declaration from William Chamberlayne that he is to have, for officiating in Steeple Gidding the house newly erected there and the Close wherein it stands, and £40 p.a. for all lands, tythes and profits during the time of his abode there - 18 July, 1651. Receipts: Chamberlaine to Cotton. £12.10s. for ½ a year's tithe - Oct. 1651 - Apr. 1652. Letter - from William Chamberlaine (to Sir Thos. Cotton). He (Chamberlaine) complains that he has not received his £12.10s. which was due on Lady Day, 1653, nor any money for the poor. Postscript - Chamberlaine will continue in the cure of Steeple G. till he (Cotton) comes to Conington. Chamberlaine will then be quite content if someone alse is presented to the living, so long as he is paid the money due to him - July, 3 1653. Witnessed receipt from William Chamberlaine for £25 from Sir Thomas Cotton, Bart, for serving the cure of Steeple G. Church. Chamberlaine, therefore acquits Sir Thomas and his tenants from all suits and demands. He promises to move from Steeple G. and to make no pretence to have anything to do with the Rectory or Cure there, except to demand such moneys as are due to him from William Freeman and Daniel Hurst, farmers to the sequestrated lands, being part of the salary due for the cure for the time past. - 29 Sep. 1653.
