TitleLetters to Sir John Heathcote, St. James' Sq., London, from John Morton, junior, his kinsman.
DescriptionReplies to request of Sir John to be informed of the character and estate of Sir Robt. Wilmot of Osmaston. Morton reports that the value of the Weston estate is about £880 p.a., producing about £440. Some of the arable is enclosed on the Trent side but it is generally too scattered to be improved by enclosing. The land is some clay and sand but mostly gravel and is poor and out-of-heart. The rents are high, £11 per yard land (a measure which includes some of every kind of land but can not be determined) but the tenants are willing to take leases of 21 years. The whole estate = 1290a. and has 23 tenants, the biggest not above £50p.a. Over £200 is needed to put the house and barns in order. The other landowners in the parish are Councellor Weston and Judge Lee. Sir Robt. Wilmot's father reduced the estates by his extravagance, but Sir Robt. W. is given a good character. Among the local curiosities are mentioned the silk mills.
