TitleLetter Henry Hoyle Oddie,Carey (?) St., to - - -
DescriptionRe, claims of tithes for the Duke of M.'s lands in Great Stukeley. Oddie has seen paper which the writer has sent Mr. Welstead with the result of the searches made on the part of Mr. Heathcote as the augmentation officer. No instance known of the payment of tithes for these lands. Therefore seems unlikely that Mr. H. will press it. We have not yet found the Title Deeds. Mr. Welstead thinks that before the Dissolution of the Monasteries the lands belonged to Ramsey Abbey, But the writer's searcher thinks that it is the Priory of Huntingdon. But lands of religious houses could have become exempt from tithes. Moreover the lands could have the benefit of protecting clause contained in 31 H.VIII. We have found that this Priory was dissolved in 30 Hy.VIII, thus vested in the Crown by statute of 31 Hy. VIII and the exemptions to which such Houses were entitled before their dissolution were kept up and continued.
