TitleFormer County Hospital, Huntingdon. Includes photograph of exterior and rough groundplan. Historical note forming part of particulars reads: 'In 1853, a group of philanthrophically[sic]-minded gentlemen in Huntingdon set about raising funds through public subscription for the provision of a new purpose-built hospital to serve the town and surrounding district. In that same year, a two acre site at Mill Common was purchased from the Freemen of the Borough for the sum of £600 and an architect was engaged to design a suitable building. Tenders were invited for the building contract and the lowest of these in the sum of £4,476, from a Mr Bird of Huntingdon, was accepted. The voluntary hospital was formally opened on 25th April 1854. That substantial and handsome building remains as the core of the present complex although extended in 1864, 1901, 1912 and 1935. With the increasing population and demand for health care in the post-war years, a number of single storey detached buildings have been constructed within the grounds. After 130 years of public service, the County Hospital was finally incapable of providing sufficient space and in 1983, a new hospital was opened nearby in Hinchingbrooke Park as a result of which the old site has become surplus to the requirements of the Regional Health Authority.'
