TitleArnold Collection
DescriptionPhotographs and papers of the Arnold and Metcalfe families of Holywell. The Arnolds and Metcalfes were traditional fenland families, earning a living by using the age-old skills of rush-cutting, boating, eel catching, fishing and wildfowling. This excellent collection includes many original photographs of working activities on the River Ouse, including prints of punt-gunning c.1900-1980s, rush-cutting c.1900-1980s, and laying eel-hives to trap eels c.1900-1960s. Other items in this collection include the visitors book for Wildcroft (the Metcalfe family home) 1908-1938, Wildcroft lodgers' register 1924-1932, an RAF navigator's notebook belonging to Tom Arnold 1944, and photographs of views of Holywell 1892-1959, including flood scenes. Many photographs had been reproduced in Nita Luxford's book A Working life on the Great Ouse (2000); we are very grateful to Nita for persuading the Arnolds to give the collection to the Record Office. There is a catalogue of these photographs in the searchroom.
