TitleReports on the Gaol: In conformity with the Act 1839-40, the system of separate confinement was introduced in May 1850. April reports from the surgeon and Visiting Justices mentioned headaches and symptoms of nervous derangement among prisoners in separate confinement in the New Ward. The Visiting Justices (Messrs. Hooper, Lenton and Heathcote) drew the attention of Sessions to the lack of ventilation in the New Ward. The cold air shaft was altered and the Michaelmas reports speak of the ventilation as satisfactory and the separate confinement system as working well. The chaplain said that he was better able, under the new system, to advise and instruct the prisoners and that 'a great many have learned to read and write well and facilities are offered to all who are disposed to regard education as a boon'. A return of the stated [ ] gaol (Oct) gives information about cost, work, punishments etc.
