TitleGaol Reports
DescriptionReports from visiting justices, mentioning an increase in expenditure on the gaol - resulting from purchases of clothing for the women prisoners, increase of numbers and higher price of provisions. The daily cost of maintenance per person had risen from 4½d in 1853 to 6d. The head turnkeys had asked for an increase in salary. The sanitary state of the gaol had been good - "entirely free from the prevailing epidemic".
The Chaplain reported a very considerable progress in the instruction of prisoners. He committed sadly that "the return of the confirmed thief to the paths of honesty is all but hopeless", but remarked on the thanks of many prisoners for religious instruction and advice.
