| Description | Is glad to find that Lord Sandwich is inclined to stretch a point and take Bigmore onto the Permanent Staff. Believes, and is supported by Mr. Issacson's opinion, that Bigmore may be perfectly efficient for the Militia service for some time to come. Will impress upon him that he is to hold the position on the understanding that he will accept his discharge if his infirmity increases and renders him unfit for duty. Enclosed: 1) Testimonial from Lieutenant Henry Wilmot of 43rd Light Infantry, Chatham. Bigmore has served for 15 years and is a good musician, and an honest and sober man. 10th September, 1853 2) Letter From John M. Biddle, assistant surgeon, 43rd Light Infantry, Chatham. Cornelius Bigmore has had a hernia for 6 years. The hernia has not increased of late, and seems not to cause any serious inconvenience. 11th October, 1853 3) Letter Mr. Isaacson, Huntingdon, to 7th Earl of Sandwich. Examined Bigmore today. He has a rupture on either side, but they are not large and he appears an active, smart man. The Medical Instructions as to recruits do not apply to staff, nor are any questions asked about ruptures in the attestation paper. Believes that Bigmore would be equal to his duties, and that considering his character and appearance he would be an acquasition. 4) Copy of the printed "Instructions for the Guidance of Medical Officers of the Army and Militia...... in the Examination of Recruits for the Militia." |
