TitleLetter to Sir Robert Bernard, from his agent, John Horne, 12 Paper Buildings [London]
DescriptionDiscussing a disagreement with Mayor Barton of Bedford over the demolition and re-building of the Market House. Horne is sure it must be illegal to increase the taxes of the freemen and tradesmen in the town to fund the works - "It is a hostile measure of Barton's against you and your interest..." He suggests a letter to the Deputy Town Clerk, Thomas Cave, addressed to the Mayor and the Corporation. The proper time to have asked for his consent would have been before the old Market House was pulled down and he would never have consented to the project being carried out by the present Mayor. Horne hopes the Burton may catch himself in the trap he has laid for Sir Robert. [Addressed to Sir Robert at Grafham].
