Title | Letter to Henry J. K. Porter, agent on the Duke's estates, from Millicent, Duchess of Manchester, Madeira |
Description | The Lord has been severely afflicting their household. Please tell Mrs Stewart that her Christian conduct has given such pleasure and she thanks God that she has such a one to rule the household. Please tell her to write to Scotland for another dairymaid. Poor Alicia Ewing's death is awful. Fred has had a bad attack of fever but is now well again. She saw a school, under the patronage of a merchant's wife, where 130 Portugese girls were taught to read the Bible. The poverty is very great though and there are no institutions to aid the poor. She is very distressed too about their own country and fears the worst is yet to come. |
